She will discover the best of herself in the worst of times . . .

Texas, 1934. Elsa Martinelli had finally found the life she'd yearned for. A family, a home and a livelihood on a farm on the Great Plains. But when drought threatens all she and her community hold dear, Elsa's world is shattered to the winds.

Fearful of the future, when Elsa wakes to find her husband has fled, she is forced to make the most agonizing decision of her life. Fight for the land she loves or take her beloved children, Loreda and Ant, west to California in search of a better life. Will it be the land of milk and honey? Or will their experience challenge every ounce of strength they possess?

From the overriding love of a mother for her child, the value of female friendship and the ability to love again - against all odds - Elsa's incredible journey is a story of survival, hope and what we do for the ones we love.

AN UNFORGETTABLE READ

What a phenomenal book! I've heard about the Great Depression (aka the Dust Bowl era), but never really understood the true severity thereof and how it uprooted hundreds of thousands of lives. After finishing this novel, I learned another important part of American history.

I listened to the audiobook via Libby, and Julia Whelan's narration is simply topnotch. She expertly guides the listener to the heart of the story.

I also loved that the romance was kept to an absolute minimum, which always suits me just fine. I felt every single emotion, the fear, the joy, the heartache, the desperation, and the longing, the characters felt.

I'm not giving it a full five-star rating as the last few chapters were a little too kumbaya for me. But I enjoyed that the audiobook included an interview with Kristin Hannah and Julia Whelan, which also gave me an inside look into the development of the story and the recording of the audiobook, as well as some interesting facts about some of the more prominent characters.
